Hi folks!

This was gonna go in the new Expert Sleepers ES-10 thread but had second thoughts.

I was looking at extending my audio inputs onto the DAW here, as I currently keep having to re-patch, etc with the ever extending sound sources I have, both modular and synth wise. In the studio I have got all the CV to the modular part covered by an ES-3 / PreSonus Studio 1824c / Squarp Hermod+, so I am happy on that side of the studio, it is just the audio bit.

Currently audio wise I am using a Focusrite 18i20, the aforementioned Presonus 1824c, Steinberg UR44C, and this is another area of concern, as it only has 6x inputs and doesn't do line levels very well. All the audio interfaces are run into a patch bay, as well, sources being modular rig, and numerous synths etc.

So... Here is the rub.

One option to extend could be the New Expert Sleepers ES-10 8x in / out interface to replace the ES-3 and then slave this to one of the interfaces via ADAT for audio and CV. This option is good in that I can just patch my stereo feeds from 2x FX Aids, Beads, Sealegs straight into it and free up eight audio channels on the audio interfaces straight away. This then gives me more options audio wise for other mono modular sources or re-patching things without worrying around losing audio feeds.

Or! I could purchase an ADAT audio interface like the Octopre / Octopre Dynamic and then slave this from one of my audio interfaces (probs 18i20) and then patch this into where the Steinberg UR44C is currently patched audio wise and gain 2x more audio channels, and not have to worry about hot signals again.

As I see it - the ES-10 route gives me a nice easy method of extending audio inputs with minimum of fuss, and gaining more audio freedom with the new 8x channels. But, I will lose 4Hp in an already full to capacity and beyond case, and the 8x ES-10 audio inputs will not be "routable" via the patch bay I have, oh, and there would be no real way of controlling the signals on the interface into the DAW (unless I buy a mixer for the modular which then goes full circle lol).

With the "traditional" ADAT audio interface route, this would be patchable, I would be able to control signal levels from the front of it, and it saves me 4HP in the case.

tl;dr Buy a modular based non-patchable audio interface, or a more traditional ADAT audio interface?

Help advise, derision, thoughts, appreciated as ever!
