ISSUE: I can’t get the Hermod+ sequencer to work with the Disting NT using the USB port. The Hermod+ has the ability to act as a host using the Type A USB. It instantly recognizes the Disting NT the minute it is plugged in, but the Disting does not seem to either listen for or receive a start signal. Even the midi monitor on the NT does not show anything (not even clock signal). If I take the same cable from the Hermod to my PC, and connect with Ableton, the Disting NT works just fine. It also connects to the MPC One, the exact same way and works just fine.
- This could be a Hermod issue.. but I don’t think so, it works with every other synth I have. see Tests below
- This could be a Disting issue … I don’t know, as it works with other hardware I have.
- This could be a configuration issue where I need to set a specific parameter in either the Hermod or Disting … Possible, but I just don’t know, see Tests below
TESTS: So here is what works using the Hermod+ USB Device Port:
(It all cases, the Hermod, Ableton, other synths etc are using MIDI ch 9, and the settings are not changed. I am just moving or exchanging the cables between 1 or 2.) (I also tried different ports). Where applicable, the clocks are set on the receiving synth from internal clock to external.
I am using two cables (only because of the way various hardware is built).
Cable 1, USB A type (Hermod Output, Ableton Output, MPC Output) to USB C Type (Disting NT input)
Cable 2. USB A Type to USB B Type (Most synths use this input type)
- Hermod+ USB to Micromonsta 2, Oberheim, both Prophets and the Intellijel MIDI 1U. All are instantly recognized by name, the minute they are plugged into Hermod (Cable 2). Sequencing is flawless.
- Ableton to the Disting NT USB Midi. (Cable 1) The Disting is instantly recognized by the Mac Studio, and Ableton. Sequencing and control works flawlessly. The Disting midi monitor works flawless as well
- MPC One to the Disting NT is also flawless using cable 1.
Other tests
- I then added the small 2 HP midi, CV/Gate breakout board to the NT to see if the TRS midi port works. Sequencing to the Disting via the breakout by anything supplying midi works perfectly. Hermod+ TRS midi out (mini jack) and MPC midi DIN out both work great.
- I updated the hermod and Disting NT to the latest firmware, no change.
- I tried adding a clock algorithm to the NT preset stack (at the top), but could not get that to work off usb either.
So why not just use the midi jacks and call it a day?
- Because they are clunky, and obstruct things. I was hoping to use a small 9” right angle usb cable to keep it out of the way. I also need the midi try for other connections.
Anyone got an idea where to start looking?
Thank you.
