Artist Discussion • Isao Tomita: expressive techniques and sound design?

As someone who is both a classical musician and synthesist, the music of Isao Tomita never ceases to fascinate me. I have been learning his techniques through listening to the source material in addition to combing the (unfortunately scarce) information discussed in online articles and interviews, and even after years of doing this most of it still just sounds like magic, lol.

I'm aware of some of the control track recording > envelope follower decoding > manual modulation stuff, but any techniques specifically related to expression are what I'm especially curious about. Designing the raw 36 VCO string orchestra is one thing, but actually "performing" it organically with seamless dynamics and legato (the glide setting on most synthesizers seems far too aggressive) is another. I am also interested in "x sound is designed by steps abc" discussions, and I welcome the use of specific examples, but I am especially interested in these specific "performance" techniques and effects techniques (phasing, reverb, etc).

Apologies for the general nature of this inquiry, but I would very much welcome a discussion of any lesser known Tomita techniques below (anything from Sound Creature is a huge plus too, as I don't speak Japanese). I appreciate your time. Experts, sound off!
