Music Tech DIY • Voltage clamping, when is it needed

Hi, I'm building some of Hagiwo's modules (for example this one: Raspberry pi VCO) and I see that he uses a lot of bat43 for overvoltage protection.
My question is when are those really needed, the two principal use cases that I see are for adc inputs of microcontrollers and for opamp inputs.

In the case of the tl07x it says that you need to limit current to 10ma in case of overvoltage, while the mcp6232 says that it does voltage clamping to both Vss and Vdd but weirdly only the diodes for Vss are listed (Datasheet).

Also the ATmega328 has ESD protection diodes.

In your opinion if the current is limited to like 1amp when is it safe to not use external clamping diodes?
