In joeman’s thread announcing his Speak and Glitch Drum Touch, @chrisa23 mentioned that Joe’s site has a section devoted to the daxophone. If I had a spare thousand US bucks I would so get one of these!
So as not to disrupt that thread, I opened a new one to discuss this weird, wonderful instrument.
For those who haven’t heard of the daxophone, or better yet heard one, it is (simplified for brevity) a bowed (sometimes struck) wooden “tongue” attached to a soundbox and pickup. The tongue’s shape, material, etc. have big influences over the formants, and so the timbre, produced. A hand-held piece called the dax is used to roll or step-roll along the tongue, changing pitch.
To me, the canonical intro to daxophone is its inventor’s Yuxo. Expect to hear unearthly tones, sometimes comical, often uncomfortably close to those produced by vocal tracts. The fourth movement, Bubu and His Friends, is perhaps the most familiar piece from this unfamiliar instrument.
What the Cambrian explosion was to Earth lifeform design, the daxophone is to acoustic-electric sound.
