As some of you may know, I do little vanity prints of 70's Krautrock concert posters as a hobby. (I posted about my Can print in this thread). Every time I work on redrawing a new print I like to listen to live recordings from when the poster was originally printed.
I just finished a NEU! print recently and I found it really hard to find ANY bootlegs of them that weren't after Dinger's passing. Eberhard Kranemann sells some very poor quality recordings of two live dates from their summer tour in 1972 and then there is the official bootleg that Dinger released with Captain Trip Records which is not even a concert, but just an audition / rehearsal for the tour in 1972. There is also a very short video on YouTube of the Dingerland concert from 1974 - but I haven't even seen a full bootleg of that show, just the ~2 minute video.
I feel like there are a TON of bootlegs of Can and even early Kraftwerk - so it really surprises me that no one was interested enough to make bootleg recordings of the early Neu! shows. Kraftwerk seemed popular enough at the time - they had multiple TV appearances in 1970 and 1971. And Rother and Dinger were in Kraftwerk at the time.
Anyway! Would love to hear from anyone that saw NEU! in those early years during the summer tour of 1972 or even attended the Dingerland show. What was it like? Based on what I've heard - it seems like they mainly just improvised in the style of the first record but didn't really "play the songs" in the way that Rother does now.
