I've been thinking about this for a little while and I kinda think there's really only three true audio effects which define sound: filter, delay, and drive.
A phaser is a filter.
A flanger is a delay.
A chorus is a delay.
A reverb is a delay.
A pitch shifter is a delay.
A S&H is a delay.
A resonator is a delay.
Etc.
Are all audio effects just some combination of these three?
I might say "panning" is a fourth but I think that one is a bit dubious...
