May Night, is a stew of ideas based on a Russian May Night. “May Night” itself refers to the Rimsky-Korsakov opera. I saw a dress rehearsal of the opera and was impressed with the feeling created by the dark blue stage setting. I started my sound picture thinking about that. I then started thinking about Nabakov's description of his childhood in Russia and his delight in seeing the sphinx moths appear. Finally, I added in a bit of Stanilav Lem's playful idea of the stars being originally arranged in rows and lines in the sky (From his satirical SF stories in The Cyberiad).

The stars come out one by one, become impatient and appear in a rush, frogs croak, a nightbird calls and the sphinx moths arrive. Our hero starts to fall asleep and starts to fantasise about stars clumsily dancing with comets flying in and out.
On a technical note, the whip like sounds were created by sending the modular sounds in a MXR Pitch Transposer, turning the feedback right up and then quickly changing the pitch from + 1 cent to -1 cent.
